Not all men are created equal, at least when it comes to hair. If you’re blessed with curly hair, you’re also cursed with the burden of caring for it. The secret lies in managing your waves, coils, and kinks every day, whatever the weather. This type of hair requires extra knowledge and far more products to keep things under control.

For men with shorter or medium-length curly hair the following products are best:

  • Gel defines the hair, making it useful for shaping, keeping the waves smooth and not sticky. It will keep a good hold of the curls while yielding a natural gloss.
  • Pomade is great for side sweeping or slicking back your waves creating and sleek, shiny hair.
  • Hair wax allows you to shape and design your hair, keeping it secured in place for all-day control. It brings gravity-defying hairstyles for both straight and wavy hair.

For longer hair lengths, different products will lead to more optimal results:

  • Cream keeps curly hair from “puffing out” and frizzing, taming curls and coils. It also provides definition.
  • Mousse is great for curly hair providing volume and added control, perfect for dangling or loosely-styled curls giving a natural look.
  • Hair spray locks in your desired hair style, ensuring it stays in place all day.

To do any job well, you need the right tools. Hair styling is no different. Utilizing these essential tools will create the look you are desiring:

  • A Wide-tooth comb has wide gaps between the comb’s teeth, allowing for effective combing of the various types of curly hair.
  • A hair pick is the perfect tool for curly hair. It helps tremendously in detangling kinky hair, allowing retouching the kinks, and can add volume.
  • A Microfiber towel takes the moisture out of your mane much faster than a regular terry cloth towel. This is important because how you dry your hair has a definite effect on its health. With microfiber there is less friction and the drying is gentler on the hair, ensuring a frizz-free dry.
  • A skinny roller brush is ideal for creating waves or bigger, looser curls when styling your hair with a hair dryer and diffuser. Brushing out curls works best on wet hair.
  • A hair dryer with a diffuser attachment at the end of the nozzle is a great way to achieve volume, because it distributes heat evenly and safely to your curls. An ionic dryer will also prevent excess damage by allowing the cuticle to dry from the inside out. However, hair dryers should not be used daily. The maximum frequency of use for hair dryers is every other day.

While there is a worldwide trend and appreciation of men sporting curly hair with natural texture, it can be a real struggle when it comes to styling it. Whether you have naturally kinky and thick curls or you’d like to try something more textured than your regular style, we’ve got the basic styling techniques to make it happen.

Palm rolling or shingling. Styling creams are great for palm-rolling or shingling, which are product distribution methods that stretch out coils and clump them for greater texture definition and elongation.

Tease. The easiest way to tease without causing damage is to only comb downwards (not up and down). This method causes less tangles and damage while still adding volume. Basically, you just want to mush your strands as closely to your scalp as possible. Get a fine comb and back comb at the roots of your hair. If you’re gentle, this won’t damage your hair and it will give you that volume lift exactly where you need it. Once you’ve finished back combing, you can lay your finished curls over the top.

Scrunch. To emphasize curl texture, scrunch a hydrating styling product into your dry hair. But keep your hands  from touching your curls afterward, or you run the risk of having a halo full of frizz.

Now, for some more advanced styling techniques for long hair, we’ve included these top two:

Pineapple scrunch. The pineapple method consists of creating a loose, high ponytail on top of your head (i.e., a loose bun). The style arranges the hair in a way that mitigates frizz, flattened curls and knots when sleeping. Since your hair is arranged on top of your head, the sides and back of your hair are the only parts that will touch the pillow while you sleep. Whether you’re using a scrunchie, ouchless elastic band, or a different ponytail holder, the item should have enough elasticity to be looped once around your hair and prevent dents and creases from forming in your hair while you sleep.

This is how to do it:

  • Bend forward and gather your hair together on top of your head.
  • secure your hair loosely with an ouchless elastic band or scrunchie. Note that it’s important that the band or scrunchie isn’t tight.
  • Put on a satin bonnet or scarf for additional protection.

Plopping. Plopping soaks up moisture without creating frizz while your hair dries, significantly cutting down your drying time. If you have fine hair or looser waves, plopping can create lift at the roots, since your hair is drying on top of your head rather than being weighed down. And if on some days your waves or curls tend to disappear or look limp, this will enhance your curl pattern by scrunching up the curls while they dry. Use a t-shirt or a microfiber towel.

Following are the instructions for plopping:

  • Start with freshly washed hair.
  • Thoroughly saturate your hair with moisturizer and styler.
  • Lay a towel or t-shirt with sleeves on the chair closest to you.
  • Flip your head forward so your hair is in the center of the towel or t-shirt.
  • Take the flap of fabric that is behind your head and flip it up over your neck, then tie the long sleeves of the shirt (or extra fabric of your microfiber towel) behind your head in a knot. If you have extra material or used a long-sleeved shirt, wrap the extra length of the sleeves around to the front and tie the ends in a knot. This will make your turban more secure.

These styling tips should keep your hair in fine form and give you the curls you desire, without the hassle.
